Meet Mark Hoffman, GPHA Financial Services

Mark HoffmanMark Hoffman joined the Reimbursement and Financial Analysis Department in January. Although he’s new to GPHA’s Financial Services in Wichita, Hoffman has provided auditing and accounting services for GPHA hospitals for several years.

Hoffman has more than 35 years’ experience as a Certified Public Accountant. He began his career in January 1978 with Fox and Company, which merged with Grant Thornton in 1985. In 2010, he joined BKD’s Wichita office when Grant Thornton sold its health care practice to BKD.

By the way, what is and is not a profession is somewhat of a grey area; you might not think everything is a profession, but each job can, and is, treated that way by the person doing it. The Importance of Employee Evaluations

For many managers, the (dreaded) annual review of employees is simply a formality and one of the negatives of being higher on the corporate ladder than someone. The standard procedure is straightforward: welcome them, serve them a warm compliment sandwich (with just a little spice to keep motivation high), and send them off with a perfunctory raise, or a set or arbitrary goals that may help them earn their raise the next time around. Problem solved, that 15 minutes of awkwardly having to point out performance issues; or stumbling over yourself to ensure they know you like them personally, it’s their work ethic you detest, is done and you don’t have to do it again for 12 entire months. Sweet relief.

Medicare Cost Reports: The 1040 Forms of Critical Access Hospitals

This is the time of year that Eldon Schumacher and the GPHA reimbursement staff are very busy. The majority of GPHA hospitals end their fiscal year in December. This requires the hospital business office staff and GPHA staff to close the books, usually in February and March. Then the Independent Auditors arrive to perform their procedures. In the lastpart of April and throughout May, Eldon and his staff finish the cost report. Cost reports are due at the end of the fifthmonth following the end of the fiscal year.
