Eldon Schumacher to Receive KHA Advocacy Award

eldon schumacher khaIf you have followed the recipients of the Kansas Hospital Association Distinguished Health Care Advocate Award in the past, you know that the honor has usually been reserved for elected officials like Sen. Jerry Moran or Sen. Pat Roberts. This year, however, the KHA Executive Committee took a slightly different view of the award, deciding to look beyond public officials to others who might have a strong record of advocacy on behalf of Kansas hospitals.

The Flex Time Advantage

Increasing employee satisfaction and efficiency, and saving on costs

The times, they are a changin’. Over the past 25 years there has been noticeable shift in what had been a largely ignored employment arrangement: the schedule. In recent studies as many as 85% of employers offer some form of flex time in their organization. What has changed in the past two and half decades that would merit such a drastic change of typical business practices that existed for hundreds of years? The answer is simple: employee satisfaction.

The Top of the Stack

World Class Plumbers

Entering the world of hospital administration, it has been fun for me to replace my acronym saturated military lexicon (TDY, TOT, MRE, OPR, CC, BX, MP, IP, etc etc etc) with a new, equally extensive, medical vocabulary (OB, PT, OP, RT, OT, CT, MD, RN, on and on).  One of the terms that has captured my attention the most through the course of my transition, however, is the term “leak”.

Healthcare – Treating People in a Fee-For-Service World

Great Plains Health Alliance

Clinicians are funny people. In general they are very kind and caring individuals who have spent a good many years training for their professions. By the way, what is and is not a profession is somewhat of a grey area; you might not think everything is a profession, but each job can, and is, treated that way by the person doing it. These are professionals. Whether or not people regard the job as one of the “professions,” is a topic for another blog entry.

The Importance of Employee Evaluations

For many managers, the (dreaded) annual review of employees is simply a formality and one of the negatives of being higher on the corporate ladder than someone. The standard procedure is straightforward: welcome them, serve them a warm compliment sandwich (with just a little spice to keep motivation high), and send them off with a perfunctory raise, or a set or arbitrary goals that may help them earn their raise the next time around. Problem solved, that 15 minutes of awkwardly having to point out performance issues; or stumbling over yourself to ensure they know you like them personally, it’s their work ethic you detest, is done and you don’t have to do it again for 12 entire months. Sweet relief.
